Veterans Saluting the Flag

by Joe St Germain
(Forest Lake, Minn)

I am a proud veteran of the 9th infantry division, U.S. Army.

I do not think it is appropriate to salute when not in uniform. I feel that that honor should be entitled to active service members in uniform.

We had our time to salute the flag. We are civilians now, and a hand over our hearts is sufficient.

Joe,

Thank you for your service, and thank you for taking the time to add your thoughts to our conversation.

As you can see, many veterans feel strongly about being permitted to continue to salute the flag they served under. This new legislation simply gives them that option.

As you say, the civilian "salute" of placing the right hand over the heart is sufficient and perfectly "proper."

To each his own.
