U.S. Involvement in Vietnam

by Upchurch
(Raleigh, NC)

"...during the ten years the U.S. was involved in Vietnam"

I appreciate your myth busting. The quote above raised a question in my mind.

How long was the U.S. involved in Vietnam? I realize involvement can be defined many ways.

In a broader sense of the word we were involved in Vietnam as early as 1950 when MAAG was providing assistance to the French against Viet Minh.

Ten years was the length of the "official" U.S. involvement in Viet Nam, but as you pointed out, there were American military advisers in Vietnam as early as 1950.

The first U.S. combat troops were sent to Vietnam in 1965.

The Paris Peace Accords were signed in January, 1973 (but both sides continued fighting), and all U.S. combat troops had returned by March, 1973, when the American POW's were released.

The "official" U.S. involvement ended with the departure of the U.S. ambassador and his staff during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.
