special dispensation for saluting the flag?

A reader asks:

I know a veteran in my town who states that he was given a special dispensation for saluting the flag from someone at Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Arizona.

Is there such a thing?

Well, I'm not sure. What sort of "special dispensation" is he talking about?

With the passage of this new law, veterans are granted the right to salute the flag when not in uniform, under certain circumstances. So there would be no need for a "special dispensation" for saluting the flag, as all veterans have this right.

Is he talking about something that existed prior to the enactment of the new law?

Maybe if you could give us a few more details, we might be able to give you a better answer.

Thank you for your interest in Military-Money-Matters.com, and for taking the time to write. We will watch for additional information from you, and see if we can provide a better answer.

Or maybe some of our readers may know what he's talking about.

Special Dispensation?
by: Ken Delfino

I always thought that "special dispensations" came from the Vatican.

Yes, there was something that passed in congress last year or year before last "officially allowing" veterans to salute the flag even if not in uniform.

Being the upstart that I can be, I've saluted her whenever I felt like it.

Ken, you (and all our other veterans) have earned the right to salute the colors under which you served. I think most veterans feel like something's not quite right if they don't salute the American flag whenever it's presented, and many, like you, have done so prior to being "given permission." We're so glad Congress finally made it "officially OK."

I'm afraid to think what might happen if someone tried to stop a veteran from saluting Old Glory!

And I sometimes get some surprised looks when I salute, because for some reason, people just don't think of women when they think of veterans.

I'm so grateful that there is increased awareness now of the sacrifices made by our military members and their families, and I try to thank them whenever I can. I hope all of you will do the same.
