Small Business Owners Unite!
A reader writes: "Dear President Obama and Members of the U.S. Congress, The Federal Reserve reports that we are approaching 10 percent unemployment, and that we should expect no net new jobs for five years. But it doesn’t have to be this way. As a small business owner, I can create jobs. It’s just a matter of having the right policies. The $787 billion spending plan passed in February is not working, but I have some suggestions that will. First, use the unspent funds from the $787 billion and cut the payroll tax in half for two years. This would immediately increase the take home pay of my employees, and it would also immediately free up available cash for me to invest and hire. Second, match the Chinese capital gains rate of zero. If you’re serious about more investment in America, this is the way to go. If you want more jobs created in America rather than China, then we ought to at least match China to be competitive. Third, we need to finally confront how harmful our corporate tax rate is to job creation. When you add up federal and state taxes, we have the highest corporate tax structure in the world. This needs to change, and we ought to match Ireland’s corporate rate of 12.5% if we are serious about creating jobs. Lastly, we need to abolish the death tax once and for all. We are already taxed on everything that we earn. This tax undermines the promise that hard, honest work will be rewarded. Inheritance is the most powerful accumulator of capital and taxing it is destructive. You may be wondering how we can pay for these solutions. It’s time that the government is forced to undergo the same prioritizing that every small business does. Use the TARP and the unspent portion of the $787 billion Economic Recovery Act funds. Don’t forget that if you make these changes, small businesses across America will be able to create more jobs and the federal government will have more tax revenue because of more economic growth and more people working. I am suggesting these proposals to you because I want to work with you to create jobs.
