As we've said, we believe very strongly that the 2008 Presidential election will shape the future of America in a way that few elections have. We want to hear your election opinions.
What do you think are the most important issues -- the ones that will determine which candidate you vote for?
How will you decide which candidate to vote for? Will you vote along Party lines? Will you vote on the issues? The personalities?
What role do you believe the War on Terror plays in this election? Is it a major defining issue, as we believe it is?
We want to know how you view the issues and the candidates. We want to encourage a healthy debate that will help others become better informed before deciding which candidate to cast their votes for.
But we're going to have to set a few ground rules in order to keep this discussion on the proper level.
These rules are in addition to the "submission guidelines" you have to agree to in order to post here. Your submission constitutes your agreement with these rules and guidelines. If you don't agree to abide by them and enter into the spirit of an educational debate, don't bother to send us your post. This will not be allowed to degenerate into a flame-throwing contest.
First, we will maintain decorum in this process, and control over it. You may express your opinions with regard to any of the questions posed above, or any other issues related to the 2008 Presidential election. You may express your opinions related to the candidates, their qualifications, their positions on the issues, their past actions and experience, etc.
What you may NOT do is engage in personal attacks, either on the candidates or on other posters. No flaming allowed.
Your posts must be polite, civil, in good taste (in our sole discretion), and must be specific in nature. For example, "He (or she) is just an idiot," won't be helpful to anyone, and won't be published. "He (or she) took an unpopular stand on X, when he said Y," on the other hand, is informative, and may help someone decide whether that candidate is the one they wish to support.
Please give the source of your information, and the facts to back up your assertions. If you are sharing something you received by e-mail and you don't know who the author is, check it for truthfulness on either snopes.com, Urban Legends, or another similar service, AND include in your post a link to the page where you verified its truthfulness before posting it. If this link is not included, your post will not be published. We will not publish unsubstantiated rumors.
You can imagine the amount of time it would take if we had to independently verify each submission! But if each of you verifies your own submission and includes the link, then all we (and other readers) have to do is click on the link you provide to check it out. If you don't know how to create the link, here's what you do: While you're on the page that verifies what you are submitting, highlight the url in the address bar at the top of the page, right click on it, and select "copy." Then go to the form where you're submitting your entry, put your cursor where you want the link to appear, right click, and select "paste."
And tell us whether you are currently on active duty, a reservist, a retiree, a veteran, a spouse of one of the above, or a civilian.
We reserve the right to reject any post that is unverified rumor, or that we feel is in poor taste, is defamatory in any way, violates the submission guidelines, or is just something we don't want to publish on our site. (If you feel strongly about publishing it, we'll be happy to direct you to the company that helps us build this web site, and you can build your own!)
Egregious violations will result in the poster being banned from making any further posts.
To find out which candidate's views are closest to your own, take the survey at the Minnesota Public Radio site. You can also view the cumulative data and the candidates' positions on the major issues by clicking on the tabs. The issues covered include: the war in Iraq, Iran and nuclear power, immigration reform, tax cuts, collapse of the mortgage industry, education, social security, and health care, among others.
Engaging in open debate about political issues is one of the things that sets America apart from many other countries in the world.
We want to encourage you to participate in our discussion here, to help others become better informed voters. Your submission constitutes your agreement to the published submission guidelines.
